What Homeowners Should Know About the New HVAC Refrigerant Rules

If you are shopping for a new air conditioner or heat pump, you may see unfamiliar refrigerant names such as R-32 or R-454B. You may also hear that R-410A is being “phased out.” The practical answer is simpler than it sounds: newer residential HVAC equipment is moving to refrigerants with a lower global warming potential, but an existing R-410A system doesn’t suddenly become illegal or unusable. What changed with residential HVAC refrigerants? The current transition comes from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Technology Transitions Program under the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act. The rules restrict higher-global-warming-potential hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants in certain new [...]

The New EPS Refrigerant Requirement for 2023

By |April 10, 2024|Categories: AC Service, Refrigeration|

The Department of Energy (DOE) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPS) have consistently pushed to enhance the energy efficiency of HVAC units and make them more environment-friendly. In the past decade, certain refrigerants used in HVAC systems have been banned, and the minimum efficiency standards for AC units have been changed too. Keeping up with the efforts, the DOE has planned to further raise the minimum efficiency requirements of air-based heat pumps and central air conditioners in 2023. As a result, all the new systems sold in the US from January 1, 2023, will have to meet the new minimum standards. [...]
